James Cook University is in the midst of a major digital transformation project, which includes standardizing blended teaching, migrating over 3000 subjects on to a newer LMS and future plans for 2020. JCU has always had good blended learning standards, however this transformation project means translating these good standards to practical teaching. In this session Danny will outline their plans for the future, whole of institution transformation strategy and how they are moving beyond the baseline.

1:50 PM - 2:30 PM De-designing for blended learning: Integrating the Academic Skills for University Success MOOCs into on-campus classes at the University of Sydney Centre for English Teaching

The University of Sydney Centre for English Teaching developed a series of five Massive Open Online Courses, the Academic Skills for University Success Specialization, aimed at preparing students for tertiary study at an English-medium university by introducing them to the core values and expectations of academic culture. Whilst the courses were originally designed to be delivered in purely online mode, they are now being adapted for blended delivery in CET’s on-campus classes. In this session, Katherine will discuss how the combination of the inquiry-based pedagogical approach and the use of adaptive technology influenced the design of the online learning experience with a focus on personalisation and learner autonomy.

Western Sydney University is concluding the implementation of a 3 year project to offer the Bachelor of Communication as on-campus or online on a unit by unit basis. The project involved creating communities of practice among academic staff to design best practice online materials and delivery methods. In this session Lynette will discuss the journey they have been on and the challenges encountered along the way as well as the lessons learnt.

The ‘flipped classroom’ model of blended learning involves online content delivery, followed by active learning in the classroom. The success of this model depends on strong student engagement both with pre-class preparation and in-class participation, but neither are guaranteed; indeed, lack of preparation and lack of attendance by students are among the most common complaints of academic teachers. How can we motivate students to engage more fully in both aspects of learning? In this session, Raoul will discuss initiatives currently being trialed in his unit to encourage engagement in preparation for class, and participation in class.

There is no single model for the flipped classroom—the term is widely used to describe almost any class structure that provides pre-recorded lectures followed by in-class exercises.
Flipped classrooms were initially introduced to one nursing unit and soon spread across the whole unit. Since then there has been a transition across the curriculum and the course. In this session Kerry will discuss the framework adopted by the School of Nursing and Midwifery for before and after class engagement.

5:00 PM - 5:40 PM Curriculum Mapping Tool: A Tool to Support Strategic and Cultural Change in Higher Education

The Western Sydney University Curriculum Mapping Tool (CMT) was developed to enable the production of visual and summary data of academic programs to allow the institution to which could:

(1) Demonstrate the full alignment of course and unit learning outcomes and assessment across and within segments of a course to assist in the scaffolding of student learning; and

(2) Explicitly integrate the embedding of generic skills and higher order attributes articulated through the university’s graduate attributes.

(3) Allows for the mapping of Professional Standards (i.e. the requirements of Professional Accreditation bodies) across the curriculum to facilitate the development of documentation required for professional accreditation.

This tool is currently being used by the institution to provide a high level of transparency and quality assurance to its programs that in the past could only be dreamed of.

  • Discuss the development and implementation of the CMT

  • Outline future development of this tool

In this session Beth will talk about how Federation University is making significant steps towards standardizing and setting up procedures for blended learning which can then be scaled across schools. This session will look at customizing blended learning that is shared between schools.

6:00 PM - 6:40 PM CHAMPAGNE ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION: Learning Analytics to Leverage Data on Student Engagement and Effectiveness of Course Design

Learning analytics is playing an extremely important role in gauging student engagement and satisfaction. The University of Sydney has moved beyond retention and is trying to make sense of data and the student experience in a blended learning environment. 40% are very satisfied, 20% are on the fence, and 40 % are finding it difficult to keep up. The university is using analytics to investigate why, while also looking at the design of the courses that have high achievement rates.

  • Creating a holistic vision for strategy and enabling support for academics in course design
