MASTER CLASS A

8:00 AM - 12:00 PM Transforming Education: Innovation Management and the Transformation Process for Active and Blended Learning

Born out of Penn State’s mission to transform education, active and blended learning faculty development programs not only offer full support for faculty who wish to redesign their existing residential instruction course to an innovative blended (face-to-face and online) format, but are also supported in exploring new teaching practices and scholarship opportunities.

Courses delivered in a blended format will ideally increase student engagement by moving more lecture material online to be reviewed outside class, freeing in-class, face-to-face time for activities such as discussion, problem-solving, teamwork, and project-based learning. Blended courses can also increase access to students living at a distance and non-traditional students who are working while taking classes. Delivering courses in a blended format can also decrease costs.

In this interactive master class, Jennifer Sparrow, Senior Director of Teaching and Learning with Technology at Penn State University will deliver a session on the importance of structuring learning space design, managing innovation process, working with emerging technologies and designing and delivering blended learning programs.

MASTER CLASS B

1:00 PM - 4:00 PM Framework for Blended Learning: As Agile, Responsive and Collaborative Approach to Couse and Unit Design

Dr. Suneeti Rekhari, Blended Learning Co-ordinator, Victoria University Anselm Paul, Blended Learning Coordinator and Designer, Victoria University
There are multiple definitions, variations and methodologies for implementing blended learning. In this Master Class Dr Suneeti and Anselm will go into detail about the methodology they have created for successful implementation of blended learning projects. The approach looks at leveraging technology and encourages Active Learning in units at all stages of:

  • Design: collaboration between teaching teams to create unit Story Boards
  • Development: Dual pathway access is created on the Story Board to reify ideas and encourage a ‘storytelling’ approach
  • Experience: Provide students with a consistent learning experience
  • Empowerment: provide opportunities for staff development, training, workshops and drop in sessions

  • Identification of challenges and stumbling blocks, as well as success strategies
  • Checklists and professional development materials
  • Illustration of before and after improvements as exemplars
