National Tertiary Education Union
The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) was formed in1993 to represent academic and general staff in higher education, TAFE andadult education in Australia. Today we proudly represent some 28,000 workersacross these sectors. As an ‘industry union’ NTEU represents all employees inacademic and general/professional classifications ranging from professors toaccountants to gardeners. No other organisation in Australia is able to speakwith a unified voice in support of tertiary education and allied institutionsand the unique and vital public interests they serve.
NTEU is one of the most democratically structured unions inAustralia: every two years, at each university, members elect a BranchCommittee to govern the affairs of the Branch and to represent members at alocal, State and National levels. NTEU employs over 100 specialist andindustrial staff to negotiate and protect members’ rights and entitlements, aswell as specialist research, campaign and communications staff. We maintainregular dialogue with government and industry peak bodies and are notaffiliated to any political party. Our primary public policy objective is topromote the work and value of universities and their staff.
